Welcome to Queensbay…It’s a lovely little town. I should know – I’ve lived here all my life. I should know – I’m Joan Altieri, the owner of Main Street’s The Garden Cottage – the best place to pick up a special gift for a friend, or for yourself. But I digress – you wanted to learn more about Queensbay.
Well the town was founded over 300 years, ago, when the first settlers arrived to the New England coast. For a long time, the water, whether it was fishing, shipping or whaling, kept the town afloat. Queensbay has a fine tradition of boat building and ships used to sail from here to all over the world.
Of course, in the 21st century, we don’t rely on shipping anymore, but boating still’s an important part of our community. The harbor is a wonderful place for boaters of all kinds – whether you’re a sailor like Chase Sanders, a fisherman like Reg Reese and his daughter Darby, or prefer to kayak around the salt marches like Lynn Masters.
Queensbay curves around our fine harbor, with high bluffs tapering down to the rocky beaches that touch the water. The focal point of the harbor is the marina area. There’s the Osprey Arms, our inn and conference center, as well as a full service marina. The town stretches up from that with Main Street, High Street and Broad Street housing most of the shops and restaurants, as well as some houses.
As you head out of town you can either go up to Queensbay Heights, the high bluffs surrounding the harbor, where there are lovely old cottages and homes. The land turns quickly wooded once you get away from the water, and there are many new
housing developments nestled into the woods. Nothing wrong with the new people – after all, they’re what keep Queensbay going.
Beyond the harbor, you’ll want to check out the Queensbay Showhouse – it’s not used now, but once was home to touring shows, featuring some of the greatest lights of the screen and stage, like Savannah Ryan.
Don’t forget to check out the Maritime Center, where Mrs. Sampson will give you all the information you need about our town.
For lighter fare, check out the Golden Pear on Main Street, just past my shop – let me tell you, Darby’s chocolate chip cookies are to die for!
